The Jester, the Clown and a Fool

The Jester, The Clown and a Fool is the name of the second album and is also the tenth track on it. It was one of the first songs I recorded on my own after I got my home set-up going. This time I did it solo, without the band or a producer. It took about two years because I work full time and only record when my wife and son are asleep.

It started off as a concept album and if you listen to it backwards, as in start from track 10-1 rather than 1-10, you'll see there is a story and lyrical concept that follows. If you listen to it the usual way, it's just a collection of songs.

Originally I got the idea about writing songs based on the existentialist ideas from the book The Outsider by Albert Camus. The Jester that is mentioned in the album is based on the character Mersault from that book. It may seem pretentious to some but when you're songwriting, you need lyrical ideas that don't always involve you. There are only so many love songs or angst ridden ditties you can write.

In a nutshell, it's about The Jester who killed The Clown and became a Fool while Hiding in Plain Sight knowing that All the World's a Stage and you just play your part. As long as you're Faithful to yourself, you can Face The Sun and the Shadows will fall behind, but no matter what, you're just Killing Time till time kills you.

Forget I told you all that. Just listen to the album the way it is. The other stuff is probably only meaningful to me. I had a great time recording the album.

It is not really heavy on lyrical content but the underlying themes are always there, even on "Death Defying Stunt", a song I wrote long before I decided to record a second album. That's an alternative rocker written for my son. It's not a dark song, as the title implies. It's about defying death, so to me it's uplifting. It's just me telling him we're not here for long, so make the most of it. It doesn't get easier, we just get tougher and "the only truth we know is death and taxes kills us all."

The album hasn't been officially released yet. I have yet to print any copies. Don't fancy myself going out there and having to sell Cds like the last time around. For the time being check it out on the ReverbNation playlist or email me at chandra_amitabh@hotmail.com and I will send you an exclusive download link. It's free but if you want to support my songwriting efforts please feel free to Paypal me any amount you wish. You can preview the first three songs right here. Cheers!

Recording Done

After more than a year and a half of recording, or rather learning how to record on my own while recording, the album is done. Right now I am editing and mixing and trying to get it to flow like how an album should.

I am a fan of songs rather than albums by bands and artists that I like but there is nothing like a full album that takes you on a ride from beginning to end. So far there is a sort of unpredictable feel to it, as a friend pointed out recently. Looks like at least 10 songs will make it onto the album. There were close to 18 songs recorded but as most people who record will tell you, not everything you come up with will end up on an album.

If you've been listening to the songs I have already uploaded, you'll know the album will not sound like the last one. I am in a different place now than I was 6 years ago, so naturally even the songs will be different. However, it is still very much me because I played every instrument and recorded, arranged and produced everything on my own. It feels liberating not having to rely on anyone but myself, flaws and all.
